Review Date: 23rd July' 2006

Known for its excellence in mobile machines, Sony offers yet another VAIO. This time it's the VAIO VGN-FE15GP. Using an Intel Centrino Duo model featuring the Intel Core Due T2300 (1.66GHz) processor with 512MB of DDR2 memory and the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 (with 256MB of dedicated video memory).

Coupled with the trademark Sony VAIO suite of features and extremely user friendly design, the VGN-FE15GP feels like an Apple iBook (especially due to its overall white color) but works like the latest dual core PC notebook.

Of noteworthy mention is the built in Motion Eye pinhole camera at the top of the screen. The unobtrusive design is discreet and the captured images are clear and stable. The added DVD Dual Layer Drive burns all DVD and CD formats while a powerful built-in wireless LAN aerial provides fast and stable wireless connection. The VGN-FE15GP also features fairly good audio for a notebook at least.

Upon opening up the VGN-FE15GP, the first thing you will notice is the exceptionally bright and clear screen. This is due to the double lamp screen feature. At first the screen seems to be slightly glaring but after a while you get used to it and the colors seem to jump out with richness. The button placement is almost iBook-like with volume controls on the upper left; complete with a mute button while the power button is on the upper right.

We really liked the keyboard with rounded keys as it had a nice feedback, ample palm rest room and very little noise. The touchpad at the bottom was a little scratchy to the touch but provided sensitive yet precise control. Overall operation was extremely silent except when burning a disc. In addition, the VGN-FE15GP emits very little heat compared to other notebooks.

With the specifications mentioned earlier it's no wonder this VAIO performs so admirably and to top it all off you get a decent battery life of nearly 3 hours with the included battery pack. Of course there's always the option to go for a higher capacity battery but doing so will sacrifice overall weight, size and beauty of the VGN-FE15GP design.

Overall, the Sony VAIO VGN-FE15GP is very powerful and very user-friendly. The stable system, nice multimedia features and bundled software would be perfect for the average consumer or even mobile worker on the go.
