Looking for an inexpensive pocket PC that offers the familiar Microsoft Windows operating system?

Check out the iPAQ rx1955 by Hewlett-Packard. Costing about $170, this 4.4 ounce PPC is small enough to fit in almost any pocket while it still packs the well-known Windows menus and programs.

Some of the functionality you'll get with the rx1955:

  • Recognizable Windows menus
  • MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint (for viewing presentations only) included in the OS (Windows Mobile 5)
  • Calculator, note pad, contacts and calendar, all in the classic Microsoft format
  • Wireless email and Internet access at most WiFi hotspots, thanks to the integrated Ethernet card
  • Voice recording, audio and video viewing with Windows Media Player
  • One of the smallest PDAs at just 4 inches tall and 1.9 inches wide
  • Big display size (3.5 inches), especially considering the unit size
  • Rechargeable Lithium battery
  • USB port
  • MMC, SDIO Card and Secure Digital (SD) slots for additional storage
What you won't get with the rx1955:
  • Very much installed memory - just 32MB (the minimum for Windows Mobile 5)
  • Keyboard or control panel input capability
  • The standard 1 year warranty of most PDAs, with the rx1955 you'll have just 90 days
  • Much power, you will probably have problems running three or four programs at any one time
  • Bluetooth capability
If you are looking for a PDA for simple, no-frills tasks, this might work for you. With a low price tag and few bells and whistles, you will be able to check your email, create a document and spreadsheet your expenses…just don't expect to do it all at once.
