Specialty PDAs have recently hit the handheld market and the iPAQ hx2790 by Hewlett-Packard is one of them. While most of the software and hardware is ordinary, the one addition that sets this handheld apart from the rest is the fingerprint reader. This security feature is great for those who value security over most everything else. This is one of the few PDAs that offers such a high level of protection.

The biggest problem is that the fingerprint reader will often generate a failed reading with even a slight variation in the angle of a finger. There is a back up log in procedure in the form of the old standby, a password, for times when your fingerprint goes unreadable multiple times.

In addition to the fancy fingerprint reader, you'll get:

  • Bluetooth Compatibility
  • MP3 player
  • Wireless Internet via the included Ethernet card
  • Video recording and playback
  • All the essentials like word processor, spreadsheet, email and a calculator
  • 624 MHz processor and 64MB of storage
The disadvantages of this PDA are fairly few:
  • The aforementioned fingerprint reader can lock the user out
  • Price of about $350, about $80 more than the same HP PDA without the fingerprint reader
  • Images aren't very crisp, not great for sharing photos
  • Control Pad, keyboard or keypad input methods
  • You won't get a lot of software bundled with the gadget
If security is an issue and this PDA offers all the storage and built in features you need, then pick one up. If you are looking for more, the iPAQ hx2750 offers more elements and a price tag to go with it. For a scaled down model, without the fingerprint reader, give the hx2490 a test drive.
