Review Date: 26 Oct' 2007
September, this year, Seagate announced another milestone for the Momentus
5400 hard drive series. Adding another 90GB to the previous maximum of
160GB in Seagate's 5400.3 Momentus series, the Momentus 5400.4, with a
storage capacity of 250 gigabytes, dwarfs most other hard drives available
in the market for mainstream notebook PC's.
Like Momentus 5400.3, its predecessor, the newer Momentus 5400.4 exploits
the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording technology. As opposed to longitudinal
recording, the perpendicular one offers greater storage density over the
same media. In search for gigantic drives to entice the storage-hungry
masses, that's something notebook manufacturers will greatly welcome.
Seagate Momentus 5400.4 runs at a not-so-shocking 5400RPM, however it
has a Serial ATA 3.0 gigabyte/second interface. Again, it's not the speed
but capacity that this hard drive boasts of.
Other features that this hard drive boasts of are shock resistant design,
lower power consumption and silent operation. Once incorporated by notebook
manufacturers in their systems, it would be exciting to see this hard
drive in action.
