Review Specifications Compare Prices

Review Date: 3rd Jan' 08

Coming from the ThinkPad line, X61 is an ultraportable business laptop that was made for busy mobile professionals who demand the very best. Even though it's quite lightweight, i.e. 3.59 pounds with the extended 8-cell battery, it packs in the essential design and usability features that customers have come to know the ThinkPad series for. If you are a frequent business traveler you'll feel great knowing you didn't lose much but weight when you bring the X61 out.

The Thinkpad X61 reviewed here comes equipped with an Intel 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo processor providing ample processing power; with an adequate 1GB of DDR2 memory. The 7200RPM hard drive is where the X61 stands out despite the capacity being only 100GB, the extra spindle speed adds a real boost to the X61’s performance.

Intel’s GMA X3100 as part of X61’s GM965 Intel chipset handles graphic duties. Although built-in graphic controllers are typically underpowered in comparison to discrete ones the X3100 does feature hardware transforming & lighting, up to 384MB of shared memory and even supports DirectX 10; needless to say it runs Vista’s Aero interface effortlessly.

The price for the ThinkPad X61 with the above configuration is $1,262, while you can have mobile broadband for another $90

Meant to be a business laptop, the build quality and design of X61 doesn't let it feel cheap at all, a feature welcomed by all. It sports an ultra-thin lid with tiny, but sturdy hinges that give it the grace that most other notebooks lack.

A good design is always user-friendly, and so does ThinkPad X61 have the user in mind when it comes to future upgrades with easy access panels and covers, putting other not-user-upgradeable notebooks to shame.

To make up for the lack of an integrated optical drive, owing to the very lightweight of this laptop model, ThinkPad X61 has been designed with an optional X6 ultrabase for expandability. The ultrabase not only offers an optical drive, but works like a docking station too. You may choose not to get the dock if you already have external USB drives and peripherals around. But for those who don’t and would like to have a desktop experience at work with a full-sized number-pad enabled keyboard, a mouse, a monitor, and an optical drive, the X6 ultrabase will certainly be a welcomed addition to the already impressive X61.
