A Magnificent Status Symbol Laptop
Notebook Reviews > IBM ThinkPad > X40

Review Specifications Compare Prices

This is a pricey, no-compromise slimline notepad that has quickly established itself in the market as one of the most desirable laptop computers amongst corporate circles anywhere.

It is actually viewed as a status symbol of sorts by most. A stripped down starter unit costs about $1,499 and weighs an astonishing 2.7 pounds. But let's put this in its proper perspective, the unit being referred to here runs on a 1.0 GHz Pentium M processor, 256 MB memory, 20 GB hard drive, a smaller 4-cell lithium-ion battery and no CD or DVD drive.

Still the message gets home. The point is that even when upgraded to include the usual features, this is still a very light slimline laptop.

In actual fact the IBM ThinkPad X40 is a basic laptop computer designed to enhance mobile office productivity. This hardly stops the folks at IBM from offering some exceptional qualities in this beauty. These features include a well-designed user-friendly keyboard, out-of-the-ordinary emergency-recovery tools and all the very latest wireless links.

When you include impressive specs, the IBM ThinkPad X40 still remains at less than half the weight of other competing average laptops. Albeit, at a price.

For instance a unit with a 1.2 GHz Pentium chip, 512 MB of RAM and a 40 GB hard drive will deliver a weight of 3.2 pounds but will set you back $2,299. This weight does not include the tiny 0.7 pound AC adapter.

Little wonder that the IBM ThinkPad X40 is such a desirable corporate toy in very high demand in boardrooms across the country and in many other parts of the world. The 12.1-inch size screen is adequate enough and provides an amazingly crisp, clear view with no serious pixel problems. But admittedly, the IBM ThinkPad X40 is no image or video-editing star.

Still this does not stop or discourage many in the corporate world from deeply desiring to own an IBM ThinkPad X40.
