IF Data And Hard Drive Protection Is Important To You
Notebook Reviews > IBM ThinkPad > R50e

Review Specifications Compare Prices

Although the IBM ThinkPad R50e may have started out with the noble objective of offering value for money to consumers and positioning itself as a budget notebook, it has ended up falling far short. The reality is that it is now in a situation where its major shortcoming is that users can easily find other notebooks of a similar price but with many more features in the market.

Some of the pluses of the IBM ThinkPad R50e include its active protection system and excellent battery life. The Active Protection System is designed to reduce the chances of damage to the hard drive usually caused by bumps or a fall.

Amongst the most prominent shortfalls in a rather long list are low memory at 128 MB only and the fact that it does not have a CD burner and also lacks wireless capability.

This notebook runs on an Intel Celeron M320 processor that has a clock speed of 1.3 GHz. The new Intel Celeron is similar to the highly successful Pentium M processor but runs on half the internal cache. What this means is that the notebook is able to enjoy excellent general performance and with very low power consumption, which is exactly what every notebook is looking to be able to do. The problem with the IBM ThinkPad R50e is that it comes with only 128 MB memory, which is the minimum memory required to run the Widows XP loaded. This gives a performance that is below par.

This notebook comes with a 20GB hard drive that runs at 4,200rpm which is yet another shortcoming because this size of hard drive is below average, even for a budget notebook.

Users who opt for this computer are those who do not mind the shortfalls and are so interested in the notebook's excellent data protection features that they are willing to sacrifice all for this one important feature.
