Review Date: 8th Jan' 08

Ultraportables have traditionally peaked at 13.3" in terms of display size but the Fujitsu LifeBook S6510, thanks to Fujitsu's exclusive SlimEdge Design, breaks that limit with a 14.1" display and weighing only 4 lbs even with its optical drive. Now that's impressive.

Though the extra inch in screen real estate is not cheap, for many and specially the business users, it's worth it. A hundred and fifty bucks above the $1500 mark, you can configure a LifeBook S6510 model that packs in lots of power with a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a shock mounted hard drive that stores up to 80GB of data, 1GB of RAM, 14.1" Crystal View screen, wireless draft-N connectivity and a dual layer DVD writer. Again, all wrapped in a 4 pounds package.

With such a light weight it is natural to expect the LifeBook S6510 to feel flimsy but on the contrary, Fujitsu's combination of plastics and magnesium alloys proves to be solid and gives the S6510 a very rigid feel. In keeping with this solid build, Fujitsu decided to include an easy to open push latch in the S6510 giving mobile businessmen a peace of mind, even though the hinge mechanism is strong enough to keep the LCD locked in its place on its own. Furthermore, the LifeBook S6510 features a spill-resistant keyboard and a shock-mounted hard drive further cementing its solid status.

Making room for dedicated page up & down buttons, the keyboard is almost full-size and has a spacious touchpad adding to the joy and comfort of using this notebook. Additionally, you get 4 programmable buttons above the keyboard that can be assigned to specific applications by the user. It should also be noted that the keyboard had practically no flex, which is always a welcome factor..

The size of the display, i.e. 14.1 inches, is not its only good feature. The LifeBook S6510's display uses a lovely glossy finish screen that's well thought out. Traditionally glossy screens suffer from reflections and glare in bright environments but Fujitsu managed to avoid that with the S6510 giving users the advantages of glossy screens such as the higher contrast and better saturated colors without the drawback of glare.

It is also noteworthy that this display uses an LED backlight, which helps in reducing the overall weight and further increasing the battery life. Unfortunately, everything here is not positive as the S6510's screen does suffer from poor vertical viewing angles. Though horizontal viewing angles are fine. Lastly, in keeping with the current trend Fujitsu includes a 1.3MP webcam just above the display to be used in such applications as video teleconferencing.
