Review Date : 17th Apr' 08

Dell Latitude D830 suits businessmen that are not looking for the best in portability but more of screen real estate and other powerful features such as dedicated graphics card etc. Its main competitors are the ThinkPad T61, Toshiba Tecra A9, LifeBook E8410 and a few business laptop models from HP.

Latitude D830 by no means is the cheapest offer out there. It's a solid business machine and will cost you more than $1500 for a workable configuration.

At $1723, we are able to grab a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo based Latitude D830 that has integrated graphics, a 15.4" WXGA display, 2 gigabytes of RAM, a fast hard disk that spins at 7200RPM with a storage capacity of 160GB, Intel Wi-Fi N card, a DVD writer that occupies the modular bay and can be replaced with an extra battery, Bluetooth connectivity and Mobile Broadband for on-the-go internet access.

There are plenty of enhancements that Dell allows you to make in your order, however be ready to finance the extra cash for those.

The notebook is enclosed within a magnesium alloy casing, just like the Latitude D630 model, that makes it ready for the road and everyday bumps. To our dislike, the magnesium alloy doesn't extend to cover the LCD bezel and frame around the keyboard. Nevertheless, the notebook is still a lot more durable than any notebook built on plastic casing only.

The keyboard and touchpad are fine for a business notebook but nothing extra ordinary. The dedicated media buttons as seen on Dell's consumer laptops are missing as this is a business laptop.

Latitude D830 has a 15.4" screen with a matte finish. After going through lots of glossy screens, the matte finish on this laptop seems to be a little disappointing with not so great brightness levels. Other than that, the screen is fine.

What is really remarkable about Latitude D830's screen is that it offers an optional WUXGA resolution. This is an option not seen on many business laptops with a 15.4" display.
