Dell Inspiron 700M Advanced

Review Specifications Compare Prices

Dell's Inspiron 700m Advanced, as the name suggests, is an enhanced form over the 700m base skeleton. The 700m series is thin in size and light in weight. This particular unit has a hardware configuration of:

  • Intel Pentium M processor 745 1.8GHz
  • 512 MB DDR SDRAM (More Info on 700m Memory)
  • 40 GB IDE Internal
  • 64 MB Video RAM
  • DVD +/- RW with double layer DVD+R write capability
  • 56Kbps V.92 Fax/Modem with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet and 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
This ultra portable model only weighs 4.1 pounds. It boasts numerous striking features that help this thin and lightweight notebook standout from its competitors. The performance is good enough to take it as a helpful business partner, not an ideal one though.

Talking about its design, it is a contrast of silver, white and black colors. The unit measures 1.2 inches thick and has rubber feet, which are really a good support to it. Inspiron 700m is Dell's first ultra portable to encompass a vibrant and stunning 12.1 inch widescreen display. So give better presentations now or watch DVD's with an immersive viewing experience. The native resolution is 1,280 x 800 which is wide enough for you to work with two windows opened simultaneously in parallel positions.

If you like clean screens and desktops, then keep the complementary Klear Screen moist towelettes close at hand, as you need to wipe clean the shiny screen after almost every use. Below the screen, is a pair of speakers (in a small size). These speakers have a good crisp sound. The unit doesn't offer any volume control scroll wheel or button. This task has to be done through the arrow buttons on the key board.

Coming down from the screen, our fingers get in contact with the keyboard and a touch pad. The keyboard is of small size having the buttons of size, 17.9mm and a depth of 1.8mm. Typing on such a keyboard is a difficult task and will require time getting adjusted to. The touchpad has a good size on the laptop, but it does not have a scroll button, thereby making it difficult to scroll and surf through large documents or web pages.

For the graphics, the Inspiron 700m Advanced uses Intel's Extreme Graphics 2 technology that gives substandard 3D performance when compared with other rivals, such as Sony V505 model that features ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics chip. Gamers, you don't get any cut out of that vibrant widescreen display.

The Inspiron 700m has a Broadcom based 802.11b/g wireless radio, which according to CNet's review remains online 95 feet from their test router. The 700m series has no Infrared receiver. The laptop offers good connections for the audio, FireWire, external monitor (if you require connecting one), S-Video out, and a pair of USB 2.0 ports along the sides. The laptop also has a Secure Digital flash card slot to offer for the digital photos and music enthusiasts.

Battery life, a very important factor when investing in a notebook, and that's where Inspiron 700m looses to its competitors. The battery for 700m is 2,200mAh and only lasts about 2.5 hours. The optional 8 cell battery thus becomes an essence, however at the cost of disturbing the ideal weight figure to some extent. Not an ideal companion for a business man who is always on the move.

Irrespective of some draw backs in the underlying architecture, Dell Inspiron 700m Advanced is a great choice for a mix of business and entertainment uses. It is priced cheap and can even be afforded by students. Keeping in mind the Pentium M processor and other technical stuff, it is a powerful notebook. Moreover, it is light to travel with and comes with a 3-year extended Dell warranty.
