Inspiron 6000 Advanced
Notebook
Reviews > Dell Inspiron > 6000 Series
So,
thinking of buying a notebook from the Inspiron 6000 series? Not a bad
idea as the series enjoys one of the best figure for battery life among
other Inspiron makes, but let's peak into the underlying features of its
different models before you make a final decision
A wise investment is the Dell Inspiron 6000 Advanced model. It boasts
many developments over the Base and Enhanced models that are also available
in this series. To start off, the advanced model features an Intel Pentium
M 725 processor over the Celeron M 360 that comes with the Inspiron 6000
Base model. It offers UltraSharp WSXGA display, that even the Enhanced
version lacks, and also doubles the figure for installed RAM.
Dell's Inspiron 6000 Advanced comes with the following specifications:
- Pentium M 725 Processor 1.60 GHz with 2MB Cache
- 256 MB of 400MHz shared
DDR2 SDRAM
- 6-cell Lithium Ion battery that lasts up to 4 hours 20 minutes
- Weight starts at 6.65 lbs
- Integrated Intel® Media Accelerator 900 Graphics
- 40 GB Ultra ATA hard drive
- 24X CD Burner / DVD Combo Drive
- Integrated stereo sound
- Integrated 10/100 Ethernet and 56K V.92 Modem
- Abundance of I/O Ports that include: IEEE 1394, 4-USB 2.0, Flash Memory
Slot - Secure Digital, Video: 15-pin monitor connector, 7-pin mini-DIN
connector, Audio jacks
It comes pre-installed with the genuine
XP Windows, either Professional or Home. It's rather bulky and not easily
carried away, specially when you have an upgraded hard drive or 9-cell battery
attached, but services it offers are what will convince you to take the
extra load. The optional 9-cell Lithium Ion battery, which we just spoke
of, delivers a more than 5 hours computing time on a single charge. Remember,
these battery life figures are for the Pentium M based processor that comes
with the Advanced or Enhanced models. The Base model is equipped with a
Celeron M processor that gives much lesser computing time on single charges.
Inspiron 6000 is a nice combination of silver cover and black flat base
with a cream-colored trim. The keyboard is on a platform of dark silver
color giving a mirror effect. Getting along the features, we first go through
the display screen. The 6000 Advanced has a 15.4" wide screen that
displays 30 percent more than the other native 15" LCD panels. It has
UltraSharp display technology that enables wide viewing angles and shows
off bright and vibrant colors with its superb contrast ratio. The Base and
Enhanced models are limited to a WXGA LCD display.
Next feature in our review is the typing structure. The keyboard is well
designed and is big enough to work on. However, the buttons do not press
as easily as they should. Also present are two big size and easy to press
mouse buttons on the touch pad next to the keyboard.
The sides of the laptop have the FireWire, USB ports, DVD ROM, and TV-out
ports. It has two memory slots on the bottom. They are fixed in a cubicle
shaped section. The hard drive is movable and it's an easy task to remove
it.
The machine has
easy to use CD controls. You can control the movie, song, or anything you
are watching with no trouble. It has good sound with crisp and rich effect.
As you listen to the audio music, you can even close the cover, as all of
the buttons lie exposed on the side. Audio lovers will love this feature.
The weak areas of
Inspiron 6000 Series are that there is no external switch for the Wi-Fi
scanning. In addition, the memory card reads only the Secure Digital cards
for exchanging data with equipment like PDAs, cameras, videocam etc. It
does not accept the memory sticks, compactflash cards and some other media
as well.
