Review Specifications Compare Prices

Review Date : 7th Apr' 08

The Dell Inspiron series features many low cost laptop models that are good enough for personal uses. If you are looking for a notebook PC that has a large 17" display and is still priced within the limits of a $1000 budget, Inspiron 1720 is one of the few choices available to you.

For $984, we are able to configure a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop with a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 processor, an integrated graphics card, a 17" WXGA+ display (1440 x 900 pixels resolution), a respectable 2GB of system memory, 250GB of hard drive capacity, DVD burner and wireless-N connectivity.

Though hardware upgrades, such as going for a Blu-ray drive and a TV Tuner allow you to turn this laptop into a powerful entertainment platform, we will not prefer the high priced configurations of Inspiron 1720 over the truly entertainment laptops from competing brands, for example Sony's VAIO VGN-AR730E/B. Part of the reason why we won't recommend Inspiron 1720 with advanced entertainment options is covered in the ports & expansion section.

The efforts of the design team can be seen from the wide choice of casing colors available for customizing your notebook. The inside is more refined than the earlier models but still needs the attention of Dell's designers to bring more life and match it with the appealing external looks.

The 17" form factor provides good room for keyboard and Dell Inspiron 1720 hides no compromise here. It exhibits a spacious keyboard with a dedicated numeric pad and flex has been kept to a minimum.

A great display is what many prospects for the Inspiron 1720 would be seeking and the machine doesn't disappoint. It has a glossy screen that features excellent contrast and vibrant colors. The screen is large enough for watching movies, browsing the Internet and working simultaneously on a couple of application windows. The standard display resolution is WXGA+, which is 1440 x 900 pixels on the screen. For an additional $150, you can opt for a high-resolution WUXGA display that features 1920 x 1200 pixels and is great for playing high definition content. Incase, you are opting for the Blu-ray drive, you must go for the WUXGA resolution to make the most of your investment in high definition media technology.
